Mountain Goats

I rambled south to the Snake River Canyon today. My hope was to find mountain goats. There was definitely a good number out and about, but the majority of them were in a not very photogenic area. Luckily I spotted this nanny and her kid who were browsing and resting among small cliffs.

I didn’t think much of this image at first, but it has grown on me since processing it.

Mount Moran from the north. Although it looks black and white, it is not.

Red Squirrel

The below image is by no means good, but it is the only animal I have been able to photograph the past two weeks.

This little guy was darting among the trees at Colter Bay in Teton Park.

I rambled up to Oxbow Bend today hoping to see otters. They have been on the ice a lot lately, but they weren’t out during the few hours I was there. The only pictures I took today were the 8 frames for this stitched panorama of the Tetons.

A couple more images from last weekend that required a bit of work.

This past weekend I made my annual winter trek to northern Yellowstone National Park.

I spent most of Saturday watching five wolves: four of the Silver Pack and a lone black wolf. It was great to watch as the black wolf tried to entice a female to leave the pack. He was sometimes chased off by the alpha male of the Silver Pack, and sometimes wandered off with the female only to have her return to the pack.

The Female

The Lone Black Male

The Silver Pack howling together after the female returned.

Most of Sunday was spent waiting for a bobcat to return to a deer carcass that it had been feeding on the day before. I saw it in the early morning, when it was still too dark to photograph. Unfortunately it did not return when there was light, though I was able to photograph a coyote later in the morning.

Gros Ventre River

Today I did a little snowshoeing and explored a new section of the Gros Ventre River. Photography wasn’t my only reason for doing so. I was also hoping to find some good fishing spots; you can be sure I’ll be heading back come summer..
