This past weekend I made my annual winter trek to northern Yellowstone National Park.
Bighorn Sheep Ram
Soda Butte Creek
Abiathar Peak
I spent most of Saturday watching five wolves: four of the Silver Pack and a lone black wolf. It was great to watch as the black wolf tried to entice a female to leave the pack. He was sometimes chased off by the alpha male of the Silver Pack, and sometimes wandered off with the female only to have her return to the pack.
The Female
The Lone Black Male
The Silver Pack howling together after the female returned.
Most of Sunday was spent waiting for a bobcat to return to a deer carcass that it had been feeding on the day before. I saw it in the early morning, when it was still too dark to photograph. Unfortunately it did not return when there was light, though I was able to photograph a coyote later in the morning.
